Whether you are planning an engine swap, booking freight or just curious, engine weight matters more than most people expect. Here is what car engines actually weigh, why it varies so much, and what it means when a replacement engine is shipped to you in Australia.

How heavy is a car engine?

Most passenger-car engines weigh between roughly 100 kg and 250 kg as a bare or dressed unit. A typical 4-cylinder petrol engine sits around 100–150 kg, a 4-cylinder turbo-diesel around 150–230 kg, and V6 petrol engines commonly range from 150 kg to over 200 kg. Weight depends on materials, fuel type and what is bolted to the engine when weighed.

Why do engine weights vary so much?

Three main factors move the number. Block material: an alloy block is substantially lighter than cast iron of the same capacity. Fuel type: diesels are built with stronger, heavier internals to handle higher compression. Dress level: a “bare” long block weighs far less than a fully dressed engine with manifolds, flywheel, and accessories attached. Always confirm which configuration a quoted weight refers to.

Typical weights by engine type

Engine typeApproximate weight (long block, undressed)
Small 4-cyl petrol (1.4–1.6L, alloy)~90–120 kg
Mid-size 4-cyl petrol (2.0–2.4L GDI, e.g. G4NC, G4KJ)~110–150 kg
4-cyl turbo-diesel (2.0–2.2L CRDi, e.g. D4HA, D4HB)~160–220 kg
V6 petrol (3.3–3.8L, e.g. G6DH family)~150–210 kg

Figures are indicative ranges for comparison — the crated shipping weight of any engine we sell is confirmed on your freight quote.

Can two people lift a car engine?

No — and you should not try. Even the lightest passenger-car engine is an awkward, dense load well beyond safe manual-handling limits. Workshops use an engine crane (minimum 500 kg rating) or a forklift for crated engines. Plan your delivery so mechanical lifting equipment is available at the receiving end.

How are replacement engines shipped in Australia?

Replacement engines travel crated or palletised on tailgate-equipped freight trucks. Residential deliveries need a tailgate lifter unless you have a forklift on site; workshop deliveries are usually straightforward. We crate every engine and deliver Australia-wide — see our shipping information for freight options and transit times, and our installation checklist for what to prepare before it arrives.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 4-cylinder engine weigh with the gearbox?

Add roughly 30–50 kg for a manual gearbox or 70–100 kg for an automatic on top of the engine weight — a combined 4-cylinder drivetrain often lands between 180 kg and 300 kg.

Does engine weight affect freight cost?

Yes. Freight is priced on weight, dimensions and destination. A crated 4-cylinder engine typically ships as a single-pallet consignment; remote-area deliveries cost more than metro.

How do I receive an engine at a home address?

Book tailgate delivery, keep clear access for a pallet jack on firm ground, and have help to position the crate. Never attempt to unload an engine by hand from the truck deck.
